What’s a movie or book that inspired you to travel?
Ayy y’all, it’s been a while since I wrote here; perhaps a month now. It’s all due to the exams I needed to finish, a short break to recover, recalibrate and, make an effort to regain a sense of liberation after the whole stress I had experienced from the mentally demanding activities I had engaged in.
But well, i’m perhaps, back again. And, all i’d love y’all to know I did miss y’all and, I do and will love y’all.
Some weeks back, i went on a search for movies I had planned to watch after my exams cause’ it was going to be a holiday and, though I was aware I would keep myself busy with some more better productive activities, I needed something to cool after or, feel relaxed with after being worked out.
I’m not in favour of tagging movies as an unproductive activity as most movies are hugely a positive factor in productivity such as; passing wonderful messages through good storytelling and story lines, usage of vocabularies you can use after and as well as, keeping you rethinking why a particular plot had happened that way.
But, not all movies are productive; some movies just consist of aimless plots, scenes and, most times, no take home from the after scenes. At times, it just feels aimless.
But well, after searching, I made a list of movies I would be watching such as Peaky Blinders, Vikings, From and, also few animes. One of these, I started watching weeks ago, has been really intriguing and, tempting me to travel is Vikings.
Here are some of the reasons why Vikings made me feel like travelling in order to get a peek of why it was acted and, what actual message it was trying to convey:
• Conquest of England: within the few weeks I’ve had while watching Vikings, I realised they were power seekers as well as, people who had a sucker for domination and conquest, with the aim of collectively gaining pride, dignity as well as, enlarging the little piece of inhabitation they had.
Not only that; they had this urge to be perceived as oppressors, conquerors as well as taken into consideration, men of valour and, no pity in sight. They also had a thing of taking back slaves(they believe in not just conquering lands or taking treasures but, also leaving a subtle message that they were here for business).
I wasn’t particularly fortunate to realise how they conquer other parts of the world such as the east/south but, the West which I particularly found interest in was so thrilling.
• Belief of gods: the Vikings weren’t particularly knowledgeable about Christ, they only knew the ancient Greek gods such as Thor, Zeus etc. They had deep faith in them such that, in any activities they engage in, they believe their gods were particularly a drive for that.
One time in the movie when they were headed to the West after the ruler who was in charge of raids warned them that, the west never existed, they encountered a thunderstorm and, one of them went thus “Thor is happy that we have finally figured out the west exists and, is also optimistic that we shall conquer them and, go home with many treasures”. And, they all smirked.
Another scenario was when a priest who unfortunately was a victim of their successful raid was taken onto the ships and, was being asked “Why couldn’t your God save you ? Does your God even exist?”. They convey such messages that left the priest doubting in his faith during the journey.
• An Autocratic Leader: they had concentrated power on just an individual usually called the “Earl”. The “Earl” was in charge of organising raids, gathering of men for conquests, a huge collector of half or even the full profits from the treasures these raiders had taken from the raids they had gone on and, an administrator of punishment for defaulters.
The “Earl” from my perspective, was a strict and scrupulous leader; one who makes decisions with no regrets and, always tries to restate that, truly he’s the leader. He hates opposition as well as anyone who refuses to agree with whatever he decides on.
• Gender Equality in relation to War: women in the movie were allowed to take part in conquests and raids; there was no closed pact that restricts them from participating. In fact, one of the character’s wife, Ragner Lothbrok, was a well known warrior(even before she married Ragner).
She wasn’t scared to engage in combat, had no scares to engage in physical activities with anyone; one time, she beats up two men who had tried to rape her daughter and also killed Knut(one of the character) who had tried raping her after, she saved a “Saxon” from getting rape.
The Vikings, both the women and men weren’t particularly known to be scared of going to wars or fighting them; they were all fine tuned to learn how to fight whenever opportunities call for it.
• High Sexual Urge: the men in particular had a thing for sex; they had an eye for sex at any location and at any time. Some of them openly engage in any form of sexual activities whenever they are an opportune.
• Successful Farmers: the people of Scandinavia loved agriculture so much; they produced crops, plants, rear animals as well as, were also huge earned from these activities they had engaged in.
Albeit, some farmers were poor and, had the inability to cater for themselves(due to the Earl taking a huge profits of their earnings) but, agriculture happened to be what most loved to do.
The Scandinavian consists of Denmark, Sweden, Norway and some of Finland; it would definitely be a great opportunity to explore these areas as well as, other traditions they do practice.
